If I program the Merlin 8x20 to pick up an intercom line first can I allow my station users to dial "9" for an "outside line".

Also, can I use a SLS with the Merlin 820? If so how do I wire it and must I use special sets or devices for this?

No, they would have to press a line button first, and then pick up the handset. Why would you want the line preference to be for intercom first? It makes some sense on Legend/Magix systems running in hybrid/PBX mode - and on those systems you can dial 9 to get an outside line or line pool - but not on an 820. What is a SLS??? Do you mean a DSS (direct station dialer)?

SLS=Single Line Set - Connect through a BTMI or a GPA

Some companies do more internal calling than external - thus sometimes it makes sense to access intercom first. On a Partner, that can be programmed through Auto Line Select - Not on this particular Merlin.

OK - then if SLS = single line set - you need to get a BTMI unit or General Purpose Adapter. The General Purpose Adapter still requires a BIS-10 type phone with the adjunct port and you end up sharing the line with that BIS-phone. (The General Purpose Adpater connects to the BIS-style phone and then you connect the sing;e-line phone to the GPA). A BTMI adapter is a better (more expensive) alternative. It would plug directly into your 820 in place of a regular BIS-style phone - and you would connect the single line set (or any single-line device like a fax machine or modem) directly to it.

I would watch for it on eBay - they come on periodically. Also, make sure it comes with the "special" blue-tipped connector cord that plugs into the BIS-style phone "other" port. If you see a BTMI - just grab it - they come up on eBay much more rarely.
