Hopefully someone out there can answer a simple question: I have a customer that has a Merlin 410 and BIS 10 telephones. The phones do not have a functional speakerphone (if you press speaker, it is just silence). My question is this, does speakerphone require Feature Pack 1 or Feature Pack 2 (I have looked and neither state that as a feature), do they just have bad BIS10's, or does speakerphone not even work on a Merlin 410?

I searched for a list of options provided by FP-1. Here is what I could come up with:

.Plug-in cartridge convenience
.5 party conference call
.On hook dialing, call transfer, hold reminder, group listening
.Prevents outgoing calls on individual phones
.Privacy
.Automatic outside and intercom dialing
.Last number redial, automatic line selection, do not disturb
.Ringing options

If it ain't broke, I haven't fixed it yet.

I do have access to a 410 with a FP-2 installed. The speakerphones do work so one of the FPs may be required.

.On hook dialing, call transfer, hold reminder, group listening

This indicates that the SPEAKER will work, but not the MICROPHONE -

Are you using 8-conductor line cords?

Yes. All 4 pairs are terminated. I did find a manual that states for both FP1 and FP2 you can dial on speaker, but need to pick-up to talk OR use the optional speakerphone box. But, I think this info. came out prior to BIS phones being used. The older 10 button membrane won't work unless you have the external speakerphone box, but will a BIS 10? Sounds like definitely with FP2 from Dexman's response. I need to find out which FP they have if any.

Ok. I did find out you need either FP1 or FP2 in order for the speaker to work on the BIS sets. Still waiting to see if they have a FP installed.

They don't have a FP, that is the issue. Thanks for the input guys.

There were two types of BIS telephones (in the old days). Both had speakers - but the only "true" 2-way speakerphone was the BIS-10 telephone. The other speakerphone was an HFAI-10 phone - which could use speakerphone ONLY on intercom (answer) calls and one-way on outside calls. You could easily tell the difference (in spite of misleading BIS labels) by looking on the underside of the BIS phone. If there was only a single port for connecting a line cord - the phone did NOT have 2-way speakerphone capability. If the phone had an additional "Other" port - it was a true 2-way speakerphone.

HFAI -- we call them "half-eee" cause they're half a phone... Hands Free Answer on Intercom -- gotta love the folks that decided that not everyone needs a fully functional speaker phone, that the customer should pay for that "feature" :)

I have done the wiring on these phones before, But here lately they don't seem to work. Can some one tell me the wiring sequence again? I've been using T568A. I'm not up on many terms so use plane english. thank you

T568B is the most common arrangement. Here is the sequence:

White Base/Orange Stripe
Orange Base/White Stripe
White Base/Orange Stripe
Blue Base/White Stripe
White Base/Blue Stripe
Green Base/White Stripe
White Base/Brown Stripe
Brown Base/White Stripe

Check out this link:

You should be able to use either 568A or 568B as long as you have it terminated the same on both ends.

I made 1 mistake on my 568B list. Here is the corrected version:

White Base/Orange Stripe
Orange Base/White Stripe
White Base/Green Stripe
Blue Base/White Stripe
White Base/Blue Stripe
Green Base/White Stripe
White Base/Brown Stripe
Brown Base/White Stripe

And yes, you can use either A or B as long as you keep the same convention from end-to-end.

If it ain't broke, I haven't fixed it yet.
