I am retired and need to generate additional income. I sell and install primarily Avaya systems. Recently I have been given an opportunity to repair/refurbish a quantity of Nortel Meridian 5316 and 5216 telephones. I have on hand a Meridian M8X24-DS Key Service Unit with a Centrex card installed. I have a portable dial tone generating piece of equipment.
Question: How can I test the above mentioned phones? When I plug in the phone using the proper P transformer all I get is the Model Number in the screen then the date comes on. I can access the menu screen but that is all. I cannot get dial tone to come up on any of the buttons.
I know this is a Centrex ACD phone. Do I have to pay to get a Centrex line into my shop in order to properly test?

Thanks for any help anyone may offer.

Dave

yes, that would be the cheapest way to test those sets. they only work via a digital port, not a normal analog line.

For starters, you have a Norstar key system, so the Norstar forum would be a better place to start, but you need to assign lines to the sets you want to test. You don't need a dialtone generator, the key system will provide the dial tone. You can do a Feature *0 to identify what is programmed on the buttons. To get into the system admin is Feature **266344, then once more **266344. I will provide you some commands as well. Let me dig em out.

Eddie,
I'm not sure if I am replying only to you as I am new to this forum and not quite sure how to select a particular respondee out of a group of replys. Anyhow, thank you for your reply. I do have a manual titled Centrex + Installer guide and note that it the system requires a 7324 or 7210 phone to program. I am attempting to get one of those.
When I do get one would I connect it to the first station port and the 5316 or 5216 that I want to test to the second or any other port?
Thanks
Dave

You can connect to any of the ports for admin of the system. Just needs to be a M7324 or M7310 that you administer from. So you have the feature codes for programming then?

I think I may have what I need in the manuals I have. I have the following manuals: Modular DR5 installer guide, Modular DR% System Coordinator guide and Centrex + installer guide. I think once I acquire a 7310 or 7324 I should be able to proceed to program. I guess what I need to know is, with the manuals I have and once I acquire the programming phone, should I be able to either set up default settings or otherwise program 5216 and 5316 phones?
I want to be sure all the buttons function properly. I need to be able to draw dial tone to check out the keypad etc.
