Merging pictures in GIMP

Open your individual images, create a new image with dimensions big enough to hold them all, copy and paste the images into the new one.
Warning: shameless advertisement for my own GIMP plug-ins following!
And if you want to put your pictures together in a predetermined format you can use GIMP# ( which has a Picture Package plug-in like the one found in Photoshop.

If you're using Linux you could consider using ImageMagik.
That would allow you to allign the images accurately.
There is a command line tool called "montage" that does exactly what you need.
Check out the man page for it.
