Hi

I am trying to link data froma excelinto Microsoft Project. I have a number of start and end dates which I am trying to import to project as tasks.

The idea is that I can assign resources between the start and end dates in project and then if the dates change in excel I can update project through the import wizard.

I have an id for each set of dates which can be used as a primary key, but when using the import wizard, I am unsure which field to assign it to.

Any ideas how I do this?

Choose one or the other.

Either do all your project tracking Excel (in a PMI survey a few years ago, a spreadsheet was the most popular way of tracking projects) or do it in Project. As you have implied in your question: it's a lot of work to keep the two files in sync.

You have a choice on how to allocate your time as a Project Manager: managing the project or managing the updates between files.

For me, it's a no-brainer.

Apologies I tried to simply my post by saying I was using excel. I actually export from a sql server into excel as this is the only way of getting the dates out of our sales database. Problem I have is that the sales database will not plan resources and I do not want to update 2 systems, so was hoping the sales database could update project via excel.

Any ideas?
