Merge pictures by gradient

I think this was asked recently, but just can't find the thread...
It was an answer to someone who wanted to know how to interweave pictures, and the suggested method involved gradients...
Can anyone point me in the right direction? I'm sure it was somewhere in this forum.
 
Ever try just placing one layer on top of another then erasing the top one with the eraser set to airbrush with very low opacity. Erase where you want the two to weave, some like to merge layers down then use the blur tool after that. Alot of work but thats all I know about doing that.

Put your 2 images on separate layers. Then add a layer mask to each. Choose the gradient tool with a linear gradient going from white to black. Now drag a gradient across each layer towards each other. It may take you a couple of attempts to perfect it, but that's the way to do it. =)
