I am trying to merge two shapes, but when I do I lose the outline color of the shapes. I am using pathfinder effects for the merge.

I am also not sure if using pathfinder effects is the easiest way to do what I need. I am pretty much just need to take two shapes "merge" them making one hollow shape. ie two squares into a single hollow rectangle. Thanks for the help.

Ron:

When you apply a pathfinder operation to multiple objects, the resulting compound path inherits the appearance of the topmost object. What you can do to prevent this, is to select all and then use the eyedropper to click on the object whose appearance you wish to use. That will apply the appearance to all objects in question and the resulting compound path will then have that appearance, too.

Pathfinder is, indeed, the tool you should be using.

Ron:

If the appearance you're losing is a more complex one, with multiple strokes or other french pastry, you could consider saving it as a style, then later apply that style to your compound path.

Both the objects have the same fill and stroke colors, so I am not sure why I am losing the stroke color. I also can't change the color after the fact. I can change the fill color but not the outline. Thanks for your help.

If you care to send me a sample Illustrator file, so I can take a look at it, I may be able to help you better. I'm thinking right now that there may be a grouping issue going on, but I'd like to take a closer look.

Email me the file at bert(at)itchybug(dot)com.
