I have a laptop and a desktop. Both with CS2. Both WinXP (and updated). Both have 1GB. And both have been working fairly quickly, even with Photoshop, Illy and maybe a few others open at the same time.

Lately, the desktop (which is only a few months old & has been far faster than the 2 year old laptop) photoshop has "ballooned" in memory usage. I've noticed certain things slowing down and now see that Photoshop is regularly using about half of the 1gb of memory (my memory is sketchy on this, but I don't recall seeing it use more than 100mb). When no photo files are open, and I leave photoshop open, eventually I see that the memory usage drops to 1 or 2 mb, but the memory is still not being released.

What is different lately? I have been to the Adobe Studio Exchange and have been downloading styles, actions, swatches... and now am making my own. So the Presets folder has jumped dramatically in size. I haven't been doing this on the laptop. Maybe just 3 or 4 to learn with. I thought maybe moving most of these "new" things out of the Adobe folder (and just to the desktop) would have an effect. No difference in memory usage.

So I checked the version- I have since updated my 9.0 to 9.0.1. No difference in memory usage. Laptop is still at 9.0.

Oh, only a handful of fonts have been added- but they've been on here for a while so I don't think that is it.

Do you think it was my Presets folder growing in size (don't know what it used to be, but I can see 2 of my folders total 345 mb). The Presets folder is now about 35mb since I moved those 2 to the desktop. Plenty of scanning and style making, but is that really a large amount and would it interfere with performance?

My working in photoshop has been fairly basic- most of the files I work with are small and are for small print jobs (we make invitations, stationery, cards...- no billboards!)

This is also not happening with other software.

I can't understand why this is only happening with the one computer. Any advice on how to correct this?

Thank you.

Nick

Sounds strange, have you checked for spyware etc. cus those little blighters can make your computer die on it's feet.
I had the same issue on an XP machine with a file called watch.exe, this file increased in size by 2 bytes every 2 seconds, it got to a very large file before it was spotted.
