Dear all,
I have a lot of customers around twin cities which lie in my support
Region.
Nearly five of them have got new machines with around of 4GB.. some
got six GB.
All of them got AIX 5.2 ( some got Ml01 some got M02)
Now two or three of the customers are saying that AIX 5.2 is taking a
lot of memory ( around 1.5 gb WHEN NO database/application running on
machineexcept the OS itself)
All are using svmon or Nmon to see memory utilization
My question with AIX 5.2 users through this forum is to check memory
utilization
on their machines and share it so that we can get closer to some
conclustion that AIX 5.2 itself consume how much memory.

I will really appreciate ur help in this regard

HI,

As said severall times in the past postings,AIX will always consume almost ALL the real memory,and will page it out only when it will have to.
This is the AIX philosophy.

"Long live king Moshiach !"

Are there any application reading a lot of data from some filesystems? If so, if these data aren't re-read more times the LRU caching performed by AIX will be almost unuseful.
As levw correctly said, if there's some RAM AIX will use.
If system does not start to paginate ... don't be worry about.
In case of need, if you will need memory for a new process, AIX will add the needed pages to the free list by stealing some page from the "persistent ones"

hi all
What about Oracle SGA ??? if the above postings are correct
for instance if the memory appear full ( when no DB or
application running except the OS itslef)
Then when Oracle is started with some SGA value then paging definetly start.
I mean that there should be some real memory empty so that other applications starting on system can take some real memory too.
If this technique is used by AIX, can somebody take me to some IBM document or link so that i can satisfy my customers.
I will appreciate ur help!!!

What does topas say?

My machines are consistent at about 20% memory utilization when idle. This is using svmon or topas - they agree!!!

Well like they said memory utilization will almost always be used up. use topas -i1 to see what i consuming it. if it is files, and not comp [on a database server] i recommend something LIKE the following;

vmo -o maxclient%=30 -p
vmo -o minperm%=10 -p
vmo -o maxperm%=30 -p
vmo -o maxfree=1024 -p == depends
vmo -o minfree=512 -p == depends on procs

g'luck
