Memory Usage for Buffer Pools/Heap Size

I have a single instance with a single UDB database defined on a system with 3Gig of memory. What is the rule of thumb to decide how big to make my buffer pool size and Heaps?

If your sys is made for olap ,your buffer is 40% of the free mem! If for the optp,buffer is 60% of the free mem!
