A friend wants me to have a look at an early iMac (Rev A or Rev B) that is not behaving itself.

I suspect faulty memory. Is there a memory utility that I can boot off CD-R that will allow me to test the machine's memory thoroughly? I gather that these models were not shipped with a diagnostic CD.

Every time the machine boots up te memory is tested by the OS.

Don't believe there is any thing on the Boot CD to test memory. If you can't fix it in 20 minutes call someone who can.

The memory test done at boot is a very basic one just to see which areas of the memory map are currently populated.

I've used a PC utility in the past that booted off floppy or CD, and performed a thorough test of memory, taking several hours to do so, and performing a far more exhaustive test that that on the diagnostic CD provided with recent Apple platforms.. I was wondering if something simillar was available for the Macintosh platform.

There is one such utility, that takes hours, and days if you want, to examine your memory. Or you could do it the easy way, go buy new memory, crack the case, install the memory, and be done with the question. The software in question is TechTool Pro, I believe the latest version of it is 3.2, but I might be wrong.

Again, it takes so long to run the test, I'd rather take the machine apart and change out the RAM, which would probably cost less, or about the same as the software program.

Good luck!

C.
