Hunted high and low on dell site and solution not found, so here we are. I'm trying to put another 256Mb in. Server has original 128 + another 256. The new memory is registered 133Mhz and with it the pc won't boot. I think the error message is memory can't be read or written, can't remember exactly. I've tried two different, but same spec dimms, both same result.

Help please! I can't find a phone number for Dell UK on the web site either. That would be helpful too. Peter Meachem

I had a similar problem. I found I could not mix registered with non-registered memory. The existing 128 and 256 DIMMs are mostly likely non-registered. You may try using just the new 256 DIMM by itself to confirm it works.

Is your Dell 2300 equipped with Pentium II or III processors? Memory modules are different for these two machines. Both machine require SDRAM, PC100, CL2, ECC and can be either registered or unbuffered. I can't remember what the difference is, just that they are not interchangable.

PII

The dell site says

Memory
Architecture 72-bit (64 data bits plus 8 parity bits ), unbuffered, SDRAM DIMMs or registered SDRAM DIMMs
DIMMs must be rated for 100-MHz operation
DIMM sockets (4) 168-pin sockets
DIMM capacities 64- and 128-MB (unbuffered)
256- and 512-MB (registered)
Standard RAM 64 MB (minimum)
Maximum RAM 512 MB using unbuffered SDRAM DIMMs
2 GB using 512-MB registered SDRAM DIMMs
BIOS address F000:0000h–F000:FFFFh
External cache none

Which I took to mean 133MHz was ok. I'm sure I recall reading somewhere on dell 100Mhz and above.

Do you reckon it has to be 100Mhz. Peter Meachem

The 133 MHz module should be backward compatible. You did not list ECC in your specifications. I am sure the PowerEdge 2300 reuires ECC memory modules.
