Hi folks,

in one of our boxes, the memory is configured as follows:

Memory Units:
Interlv. Socket Size
Bank Group Name (MB) Status
---- ----- ------ ---- ------
0 none 1901 256 OK
0 none 1902 256 OK
0 none 1903 256 OK
0 none 1904 256 OK
empty sockets: U1801 U1802 U1803 U1804 U1701 U1702 U1703 U1704 U1601 U1602 U1603 U1604

I seem to recall some advice before that if I wish to add a further 1 Gb, I should add them in certain sockets as opposed to 'pick your own'. Did I imagine it, or does anyone have any info. as to which sockets to use as the optimum? TIA.

This will depend on which sun product you own, of course, but I found (using Oracle 7 database as a workload) that my sun ue4000 was faster with one bank of 4 way interleaved memory, than with 4 banks of non-interleaved memory.

I would try to increas interleave (which speeds up any one tasks access to memory) rather than try to increase the number of banks of memory. (which allows seperate tasks not to contend for memory)

I tried to remain child-like, all I acheived was childish.

Thanke Jimbo, appreciate the input, I'll look into it. However, our application provider has this morning issued a statement to the effect that they're looking into a 'problem' with the memory management of their product. I wonder how much more hardware has been bought on what might be a false premise? Thanks again.

My boss was cranky that payroll took 3 hours on 6 CPUs, so I bought a new CPU/memory card and 2 new CPUs.
I had had 3 CPU/MEMORY cards, but the 4000 does not do 3 way interleave so I used 2 way interleave and 2 banks of RAM. When I got the new card and CPUs, I made the tech re-seat my RAM as one bank of 4 way interleave. When we booted up, the CPUs were the wrong part no.

Rather than once again re-seating all the RAM we left the card in and removed the CPUs for replacement. While we waited for the CPUs to come in we noticed that weeks payroll took 90 minutes (payroll was multithreaded to use all 6 CPUS)

the CPUs did speed it up a little bit, but interleaving the RAM was a HUGE improvement

I tried to remain child-like, all I acheived was childish.
