Does sybase have a variable that determands how much memory sybase will use from the system? Currently i have 2g physical memory on a unix box, that is the only app on there so it can have the majority of the memory, ijust wondered if sybase uses any that it finds or it uses a set amount...
let me know if you have any ideas

Sybase "needs" a certain amount of memory to start and run, but as far as I remember, it doesn't just grab more when it needs it. The total memory Sybase uses is a configurable option - "total memory". Change it by using the sp_configure "total memory" command, and then restart the server.

Also, if you have that much memory, you should almost certainly configure some of it in different sized pools (so that Sybase's optimizer can choose the appropriate IO size to use for a given query).

On many systems, putting tempdb into its own named cache can have a significant (positive) effect on performance. You may also have various tables or indexes that could benefit from being put into named caches.

Read the sections on memory management in the System Administration Guide for your version of Sybase and consider consulting the Performance and Tuning Guide too.

Best of luck,
