Hello:

I am questioning some information I am getting regarding how AIX uses memory and was looking for someone if possible to explain it.
I have someone telling me upon booting a system, if you have 4gig of mem and 512 of swap configured, that aix will use the 512 first, and the rest being swap, which is wrong in my thought. I understand that back in the day swap was configured much larger, however if you have a system with loads of memory, then isnt it true you dont need more swap, say if you had 16gig of memory you would not have a swap file of 24gig would you?

thanks

The paging must not be allways greater then memory, if you have enough memory, then you don't need it.The only reason you use a big swap, is because disks are cheaper then RAM, so you can have lots of memory at a low cost. But more swap means slower performance ...We are running with 16 Gb memory and just over 2 Gb swap. And we don't have any performance problems

greetz,

Paging does not "have" to be larger than memory. That's for the admin to determine.

Thanks...

I beleive this has helped me to prove my point and thanks for the web site!
