Meeting Request fails if an external email address is included

We often schedule meetings that include employees within our Exchange 2003 environment and outside customers and vendors.

External recipients receive the meeting invitation ok, but the local Exchange server recipients receive a blank email.

Anyone have any ideas what might be causing that?
