DR1 and DR2 relied on the motherboard's (or KSU main board) capacitor to backup memory, it uses a green capacitor.

DR3 and DR5.x use the feature/software cassette sleeve's capacitors, black and two of them soldered on small circuit traces, to backup memory.

If you swap them out, observe static discharge protection when handling the board and use a proper soldering iron so you do not burn the circuit traces off the board. You will need a vacuum bulb or solder wick or some such way to remove the solder to extract the old caps. They are Farad sized, so be careful not to short them as they can produce some real heat (and of course shorting is not good for the capacitor's longevity, too).

Mark you polarity before removing the old caps.

I have not seen it, but I have heard that a few board revisions have an odd pin spacing, which if you have such a board, you will only be able to solder in one pin of the new caps and you will need to make a small jumper wire to bridge from the board to the remaining pin.

The software takes the Blue one and the Cabinet takes the Green one from the site you gave. You can also go down to Radio Shack and probably get the one you need.

Radio Shack does not carry anything close to a 1 farad capacitor (1,000,000 MFD). Their largest only goes to 4700 MFD.

As stated, 2 black caps (CAPACITOR 36000) for the software cassette if you have DR3 or DR5.x. As stated, green cap (CAPACITOR 36010) for main board if you have DR1 or DR2.

Here is a link to a nicely composed picture of the black capacitor.

why would you do this when you can pick up a 8X24 for under $100.00 or even upgrade to and older MICS I have 2 8X24 that I cant give away

HughRunyan,

I'd be willing to make you a deal on those 8x24's! They are a solid product. Which Software version are they?

So you mean take a chance you may get an old KSU with an old capaictor for the sake of $10.00?

The answer to your first question is simple.
They are both correct depending which system you have as they have indictated.
