I have recieved a database backup from a client (Simple mode), the backup not the client. When i try to restore this I get the message "The media set for the database has 2 family members but only one are provided", yeah great grammer :). Is there anything I can do here or do I need to get another backup. Error also shows ODBC SQL STATE 42000

I believe you will need to get another backup. It sounds like their backup has spanned more than one file or device (probably on 2 tapes) and you have only one (or maybe you have more than one?)

you need the full backup and specify all the devices to restore from

eg

RESTORE DATABASE yourdb
FROM TAPE = '\\.\Tape0',TAPE = '\\.\Tape1'

Tried to do a backup simple mode - to disk only one file created. When i tried to restore this to a different database on the same server I got the same message, any other suggestions

pls can you explain what you mean when you say 'simple mode' backup. How did you backup the database, if you did it with a script pls post the code and if you did it through enterprise manager pls tell us what you clicked, and pls post any code you are trying to restore with etc as well
