I have Backup Exec 11 for Windows Servers installed on a Windows SBS 2003 R2 Premium and it has been working pretty reliably for about a year. Then we had a motherboard failure and had to change it out. We used the same basic MB and installed all the proper chipset and USB drivers etc.

However all of a sudden Backup Exec will not recognize ANY of the external USB drives that we back up to. No matter what job I run, inventory or test - they all fail. The warnings are saying to insert overwriteable media. I have the drive in Scratch Media but the status remains “offline.”

I can see the drive and copy and remove files from them via My Computer so I know the drives are fine. I have tried re-formatting one of the drives and that did not make any difference. I have run Live Update to be sure I have all the BE updates.

I HATE the Symantec site and support and can not find ANYTHING on these issues or on the error code I am getting in the logs which are:

History Log:
e0008212 - Library error - invalid element address.

Job Log:
Final error: 0xe0008212 - Library error - invalid element address.
Final error category: Backup Device Errors

If you haven't already it is highly recommended that you use Symantec Veritas Drivers for the tape drive unit and not the hardware vendors drivers. Have you seen the document below yet pertaining to your specific error?

Error "0xe0008212 - Library error - invalid element address" is reported during an inventory or backup operation in Symantec Backup Exec for Windows Servers
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Exact Error Message
Final error: 0xe0008212 - Library error - invalid element address

Details:
The above error is generated while performing any tape operation in Backup Exec for Windows Servers.

Resolution:

This error is an indication of incorrect SCSI configuration or faulty Hardware.
This issue is usually resolved by performing one or more of the following troubleshooting steps::

1. Make sure that the latest Symantec drivers have been installed. Refer to the following link:

2. Ensure that Tape Drive is not set to SCSI ID "0" or "1". These SCSI Id's are usually reserved for bootable devices.

3. Update the SCSI controller's driver and firmware.

4. Update the tape drive firmware.

5. Check the Windows Event Viewer for hardware errors (Event ID 7, 9, 11 or 15). For further troubleshooting information on this issue, refer to the Related Documents section of this TechNote.

We are not using a tape drive. We are using EXTERNAL USB drives. I have verified the drives are fine as the OS recognizes them fine, just not BE. so there is no driver issue.

I apologize. I read through it quickly and the USB part went right over my head.... Here look at this article
see if this helps.

Have you tried stop and starting BE Services while the drive is connected to see if it comes back online? If it does you may want create a quick script to do this for you and run it as a task before each backup.
