Hi.

I've searched google and could not find an answer to this question:

In media merge, when you go to restore a backup tape and you select the format of the backup tape, there is listed Unix Tar, Unix Tar(Variable block size), and Unix Tar partial. I was wondering if anyone could tell me the difference between them. Or at least tell me what Unix Tar partial means...

I ask this because I recently restored a tape using Unix Tar partial(as a last resort, I don't know what it means). I used Unix Tar to restore the tape but the program would always close out. I then scanned the tape and it looked like there was a block size problem. The block size being pretty big. So I then did Unix Tar(Variable block size) since I figured that it would adjust to the right block size...but it too would just close out the program when I ran the restore. I then did Unix Tar partial and it worked and restored the tape.

Any theories would be appreciated.

Thank You.

and if this is in the wrong section, i apologize, and just move it to wherever it should be.
