Windows XP Home, service pack2 all updates. Biostar U8668D motherboard. Plug a GE 4-in-1 USB media reader into USB port. While pulling pictures off a mediacard, I get numerous hits in Event Viewer saying "An error was detected on device\Device\Harddisk2\D during a paging operation". Sometimes the computer also crashes. Event 51, Microsoft says it's the card reader. Tried the reader in two other WindowsXP computers (one XP Pro, one Home). It works perfectly, no errors in Event Viewer.
Other USB devices work just fine on the same port of the computer, including three different brands of jump drives and a direct connect digital camera. It's a business computer and used daily. Ideas Please???
Thanks,
Rod

My guess is the card reader has a fault of some sort, despite working OK elsewhere.

I've suffered similarly, and I'm on my third different media card reader in as many months, and have concluded that most are very poor quality. Apart from generally being flimsy and lightweight (the tension in the USB cable is enough to move the device), the internal contacts which mate up the card are poor too, leading to connection errors.

I'm currently using one of Crucial's own at the moment which seems better than average.

Thanks for the response. When the card reader worked in other computers, I looked at other avenues. For this particular PC, the card reader would error in the front USB ports, but not in the back USB ports. The motherboard has two different sets of pins for front USB, so I moved the wires to the alternate set (first verifying that they were pinned correctly) and got the same error. I attached a USB hub to the back ports and ran the card reader through the hub and no errors. I now suspect the actual wires for the front USB ports and have disconnected them to prevent use.
I'll know in a day or two if I was successful.

Yes, that does seem very likely.
