Meaning of "." between terms in Fortran

I am trying to understand some Fortran code that contains the following:
IF(NT.NE.0) GO TO 15
Could someone please explain this "." operator is / does?

In oldish fortran (post Fortran II, 1966 std), the comparison operators are .ne. .eq. .le. .ge. .lt. and .gt.

The logical operators are .not. .or. .and.

Your statement reads if nt is not equal to zero goto label 15
