I upgraded to WindowsMe a few months ago. I was amazed at how slow my PC became. Startup took anything up to 2 minutes on a Pentium3 500mhz with 128mb ram, so I uninstalled and went back to Windows 98. With exactly the same programs on the system and in the startup folder, boot time went back to under 30 seconds. What is the reason for this massive slump in performance between the two OS's. Not just the new shell surely?

I have noticed the same problem "slow bootup with Win Me upgrade". To aliviate the problem I use the Win ME upgrade disk as the primary install CD. Win Me will prompt you when it needs to verify that you have a valid license. Then just insert the Win 98 CD and it verifies your license. This should help your boot up time because it is like installing Win Me full Version.

i have the full Windows Me version (not upgrade) and the problem is the same. SLOW!!!
I install after a full format and it's rediculously slow.
I have the same OS on my laptop and it is a lower spec machine but it is much quicker and user friendly.

The answer is MEMORY. I just bought a Kingston 128MB Dimm at Best Buy for $40 witha $10 rebate. I added it to my girlfriend's 64MB HP and it makes BIG difference. At 64MB, ME was Page Faulting out of im-memory page cache at 275 per second. At 192MB it is 0. I'm talking about when programs are in memory but not doing anything.
