ME has disappeared????????

HI

I was wondering if anyone could help me... Yesterday, I'm not sure what happened but my desktop, startmenu etc have all disappeared on me? I can restart my cpu and it boots normally, however what happens when it is booted up is that all that appears is the mouse cursor.... I can move it but there is nothing else there... I've tried to put a cd to get the autoplay to kick in but no luck...?

Any ideas....

Can you boot to safe mode and see everything?

Please always take the time to backup any and all data before performing any actions suggested for ANY problem, regardless of how minor a change it might seem. Also test the backup to make sure it is intact.

I'm not at home but I will try it...

If I can see everything, should I go to a system restore point... ( ME ) creates them automatically right? I don't believe I have ever done it manually...

Before that, run msconfig, uncheck all items in startup, and if that doesn't work, then try system restore. All else fails, make a dos boot disk, and verify that c:\windows
\desktop and/or c:\windows\startm~1 even exists. If it does, you can run the scanreg.exe command to try and recover the registry.
