ME hangs installing hardware

I have a new computer with ME (OEM) 4.9(Build 3000).
It runs on a 650 Duron, Asus 200MHz FSB VIA 133 Chipset motherboard, 128MB memory, DVD, CD-RW.

If I plug in my new digital camera (Canon G1-USB) the system hangs. "Please wait while Windows updates the hardware information database." A slider shows 0%, but never moves.

Task manager shows the progam to be not responding. Ending the task works sometimes, but other times results in a total freeze.

I have also tried a Sandisk ImageMate card reader (USB) with the same result. System/device manager shows both USB ports working properly. My Microsoft Natural keyboard is plugged into one. It works in either port.

If I try to install a new device from control panel, either through Scanners and Cameras or add new hardware, the same thing happens, regardless of whether a new device is plugged in or not.

Can anyone out there help me?

Thanks in advance, RJ

Have you updated Windows ME throught the MS update site? Is enable IRQ for USB enabled in the BIOS? Check the device manager to ensure there are no conflicting hardware. ie.. motherboard resources and such

Hope this gives a little help.
