ME find siles freeze up

ME working fine on this pc since day 1. Lately, everytime I attempt to go to start/search/find files, I freeze up. Sometimes, I can get the search started but most of the time the pc frrezes and have to reboot. Any ideas?

History? - used to be be no problem - so when did it start/anything changed - like add/remove hardware/software, virus, crash etc?

(Have you got system restore enabled - can you go back to restore point prior to problem? If not, can you restore registry from before - using scanreg /restore after booting from ME boot floppy).

I admit that I don't use the feature often as I know where I put things on this pc. Youngest son tends to use this one when he visits and I would sometimes do a search to see what he downloaded. I guess it's been a few months that it has been acting up. I don't keep SR enabled. I don't know for sure how long it's been goofy. No virus history, no major crashes.

Have u got a firewall installed? zonealarm is free and works real good.

Yes. The son is 20 and sometimes, he says things that concern me He lives out in the country so they can only get dial up internet and that is why he prefers to surf here. But anyway, yesterday, he mentioned in passing that Kazaa is coming out with a new version that is supposed to be spyware free etc. Now he knows that I won't allow Kazaa on any of my computers (this one is the only one currently hooked to the net) so I figured better do a search and make sure!

btw, I am a compulsive scanner! First thing every morning and also any time I know the son has used the computer. I use Panda IS and am very happy with it.
