Hello there... i am realy having trouble trying to gain acces to the internet, i am runniong RH5.1 and am realy strugling.

I need advice on how to input the phone number and what have you into the computer.

I have tried pppd, it shows a load of mad characters, then cuts out, displaying no system message.. :-0(

HeLp
???

You've got a few options on configuring ppp. The traditional, text file configuration, way. This can be V. painful, but have a the Howto-PPP and Howto-Serial documents are useful.

The next would be to use a command line tool like ezNet. This lets you setup and initiate PPP connections from the command line. Get it from
The last would be to use one of the many GUI configuration tools. Kppp is available for KDE and works very well. I run this under WindowMaker with no problems.

The mad characters you saw were probably because you just ran "pppd" with no options. I think it was trying to set itself up as a server and the mad characters are pppd saying "Hello? ... Hello? ..."

Hope this helps.

If you are running X, try using the network configurator to set up the dial-up details.

First run the control-panel, and pick network configuration.
If you know your ISP's details, like DNS numbers, etc, it should be fairly simple to set these details up here.
To figure out what you need to enter as a script (if need be, some ISP's will use PAP or CHAP logon, which needs no script), try logging on manually, and take note of the prompts and your input at these prompts.
Get manual access by using minicom.

After everything is set up, use the usernet utility to start the connection. (at a prompt, type: usernet & )

Hope this helps you out a bit. Configuring the pppd is a b***h !! <grin>

Cheers,
