Hi all,

Just a quick question.

If a database is set to Read-Only, would there be any negative impacts on a database if I copied the MDF & LDF files over to another server to be restored while it continues to run and/or be available? Or is this only something I would need to avoid if writes were occuring to the database?

You can not copy the mdf and ldf files if the database is still attached to the SQL Server.

To add to MrDenny's comment:

Well you CAN copy them....they just won't be usable. You will end up with a copy of both files, but they will be considered corrupt by SQL Server when you try to attach them.

Very interesting. Glad I didn't bother trying to copy them. Together, they are over 50 GB...would've been a waste of several hours of time!

Thank you both!
