I've split my database and would like to make my front end into an MDE file, only access keeps giving me the rather unhelpfull message 'Micrsoft Access was unable to create the MDE database'... any ideas why this might be?

You may not have that wizard installed. Also, the application may not be recognizing you as the administrator or creator of that application. If you use passwords, enter the password it was developed under, or return to the original machine if possible. I know there is a way to reset the author but I don't know it off the top of my head. Check the Access Help.

Sean.

Make sure to "Unhide" the database window if it is hiden or you can not use the Split.
