MDE files won't allow links to tables by Word documents

When I change an mdb file to an mde, it won't allow me to link mail merge Word documents to the tables. A window pops up called "Header Record Delimiters" full of symbolic code and two drop-downs, but nothing seems to work. Does anyone know what's going on here and how to get over it?
