McShield Won't Run as a Service

I finally got our server to install NetShield (with some very good help from the McAfee support staff -- thanks, Omar!) and wanted to share the solution in case anybody else encounters it.

During the NetShield install, Error 1920 was returned indicating that services could not be started. If you ignored the message and continued install, the program would not run. When you looked in services for McShield, the hardware profile was empty.

To correct the issue, you will need to use regedt32 to edit the registry and remove ALL references to McAfee and NAI, especially the legacy items you find. The legacy items will require you to alter the permissions before you can remove them.

After the edit, reboot and the install should go fine. Good luck!

Another reason not to use mcaffee.

I wouldn't know McAfee until you've tried out the alternatives. I've had very good luck with them. Also, the problem you are pointing out is addressed on their website in the FAQ area. The problem I mentioned originally was caused by my own feeble attempt to install something to protect the server while I looked for the proper software package. If I hadn't installed the McAfee.com to the server (which it really wasn't designed to do any way), there never would have been a problem. Some of us just have to screw something up now and then to make sure we still have the ability to be normal.
