Hello Guys,

I have been in the IT industry for 15 years. I have spent the last 6 years (part time) studying for a degree in computing graduating with a 2:1, what for may I ask? nothing I feel. Do you feel that a MCSE is worth more than a degree. I have plently of IT experience but having to fork out a couple of grand to pay for my MCSE seems almost pointless. What do you think?

I would take degree + experience over MCSE + experience any day. The degree says to me an all round knowledge of the computing world while an MCSE suggests you're up the swanny as soon as the next windows apps come out. Which will cost me ££££££'s when I have to train them from stratch... again and again and again! Especially with all the paper MCSE's out there.

But having said that I'd take the experience over the MCSE and / or Degree because I'd know they'd be more likely to be able to do the job.

I pressume you're struggle to get past anoying agencies demanding MCSE's? I hate them, they do sod all except enter your details on their DB's wrong, send you to totally inappropriate jobs and STILL demand 25% of the first years salary as payment.

If you are struggling sit Win2k Pro and Svr MCP's they're pretty identical and if you've used them you can pass them easily with the help of an exam cram book - which you CANNOT do with a degree!

My humble opinion only but its my Tup-pence worth.

P.S. Many congratulations on your hard earned degree, which will mean something to people outside the IT industry should you wish to change career...... unlike a MCSE!

Thank you for your kind response. It's just that I am feeling really let down at the moment. I am finding it extremely difficult to find a suitable IT position paying reasonable salary. I am forced to look for another job because I am being made redundant. When I apply for positions I am been told that I am over-qualified and have too much experience or I do not have a MCSE. Some of the jobs advertised out there are paying next to nothing 8,000 -16,000 and asking for a MCSE as well. What is happening?

I would agree Degree + experience counts for a lot. With all the braindumps sites out there now it really isn't worth going for an MCSE anymore.

A relative of mine, never worked in computers before managed to get an MCSE within a year of starting on the Job.

MCSE's really are now becomming a joke, if I didn't already have one I wouldn't bother, and would the degree would be my first choice as a employer!
