MCSD Listings?!?!

I live in a big city with tons of technology around me and currently I am attending classes for the MSCD. I have been looking around on job sites and in the local paper for jobs requiring the MCSD. It appears that no one knows about this certification. I find it maybe 3 or 4 times out of hundreds of job listings. What is the deal? Why can't I find jobs requiring the MCSD? I see MCSE everywhere but not the programming end of the certifications.

Please HELP!! :-0 Turbo

Hi Turbo,

IMO, you see more listings directly soliciting MCSEs because that certification applies directly to NT/2000 networking.

MCSD's skillsets can vary because the MCSD can be obtained utilizing either Visual Basic, Visual FoxPro or Visual C++. A company producing VC++ applications is unlikely to hire a VB-MCSD with no VC++ experience just because he has MCSD behind his name.

Therefore, you're more like to see an ad like:

VC++ Programmer
Must have VC++ experience or MCSD specializing in VC++.

As a sidebar, there is, and probably always will be, a higher demand for MCSEs than MCSDs, IMO. Jon Hawkins

Hi,

I agree with Jon. You will not see a job directly asking for an MCSD. The employer will be looking for the language. The MCSD will be what will get you an interview though when coupled with good experience, when you are up against similar people that don't have an MCSD or MCP in the language(s) asked for.

In 1993 I studied for the CNE certification. I worked very hard to pass all 7 exams. After getting certified, I did not believe I was a Network Engineer, but believe I had a very good knowledge of Novell Netware.
I have always heard since then that the certification does not mean anything. But, I have only heard that from people who did not, or could not pass the certification exams.
This holds true for MCSE and MCSD. The true value in these exams, I believe is the confidence it gives you. As most IT people know that we do not get IT jobs without getting technically interviewed. I believe that if you can pass and get certified in VB, NT or Novell then you can pass the interviews in your sleep.
I am still working on my MCSD, and regardless of whether or not the job requests MCSD, I will know that I am certified in Visual Basic, and I will know that I am one of an elite group. Enjoy the fraternity while it is still here. (.net?)

Visual Basic Programmer's Journal just published their salary survey. MCSE's were paid about 5,000 to 10,000 more a year than non-MCSE's.

They didn't mention MCSD certification, but what James says about the job postings not specifically saying "MCSD" applies. I work for a company who rent out an ATS (applicant tracking system) application (we're an ASP), and of the 1,000 to 3,000 job openings we see every day, very few say MCSD on them.
