I have McAfee Virusscan 8, Mcafee desktop Firewall and have just installed WIN XP Sp2. And have noticed the following behaviour:

When I boot, and have my ADSL router switched on, once the desktop loads, I notice on the taskbar that the MCafee Viursscan goes from enabled to disabled for about a minute. Then it enables itself and the firewall icon disables and after 30 seconds re-enables. During this time, I can't do anything (e.g. open explorer, open an application, etc.). Once they're both re-enabled, everything works fine. And I do notice during the disable/enable that there is traffic through the router.

If the router is not switched on when I boot, then there is none of the above behaviour.

Any ideas?

No concrete ideas, but are you actually running 3 firewalls on your system:

- VirusScan 8.0i has a (simple) firewall
- McAfee desktop firewall
- SP2 firewall

This can cause problems and ofcourse delays.

Have switched off SP2 firewall.
Didn't know about VirusScan 8.0i firewall.

When I first got this problem (coincidentally after installing sp2) I reverted to McAfee Personal Firewall and Virusscan 7.1, and the problem still occured.

In my PC's previous incarnation, (i.e. SP1) I had McAfee Personal Firewall and Virusscan 7.1 and didn't get the problem.

Coincidence - I think not. What's SP2 upto?
