We're using McAfee 8.01 & 7.1 clients on PCs at our site along with an EPO server. It appears that 5-10% of our PCs are building up large ZIP/DAT repositories that continue to grow indefinately at "C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Network Associates\Common Framework\Current\VSCANDAT1000\DAT\0000". This has caused some systems to become unstable as the c: runs out of space before we catch it. I see this problem on NT-XP operating systems & on both 7.1 & 8.01 clients. Does anyone know why this happens or how to stop it? Thanks.

Hi

Firstly, are you aware that VSE 7.1 is no longer supported by McAfee? This is qouted in there end of life statement.

Also, VSE 8.0 is end of life December 2009, so you need to start considering upgrading very soon to either 8.5 or 8.7

I would suggest 8.5 at present until Patch 1 for VSE 8.7 is released. I think this is scheduled approximately early May.

The newer products have better scanning and detection abilities so this would be a security advantage to your company. Although I would recommend testing before upgrading.

You mention NT4? I would recommend querying the supported environments for VSE 8.5 and 8.7 to see if NT4 is supported on these platforms.

Regarding the growth of DAT files on the PC's, this issue has been resolved through a combination of using a newer product like VSE 8.5 or 8.7 as well as upgrading the EPO agent, also known as the Common Management Agent (CMA) and/or McAfee Agent (MA)

EPO Agent 3.6.0 was known as the CMA and then McAfee re-branded this as the MA when version 4.0 was released.

The most recent and supported versions are:

CMA 3.6.0 Patch 4 (3.6.0.608)
MA 4.0 Patch 2 (4.0.0.1421)

Again, I would suggest that you query the supported environments for CMA and MA on NT4

Supported environments for CMA and MA:
Supported environments for VSE:
Master Supported environments for all McAfee Products:
Hope this helps.

Thanks for the reply. I am aware that VSE 7.1 is out of support & we are phasing it out as we can. I did not know the VSE 8 end of life date. That's good to know. It's very possible that upgrading all our PCs to VSE 8.5 minimum "might" resolve this issue, but we have a lot of PCs & limited staffing. This only happens on a small % of our total PCs, but it's enough to be a pain. I'm not the first person to see this problem, but I haven't found an explanation as to exactly why it happens and if there's a fix (short of a full VSE upgrade).
