I have ASaP on my Win98 machine. I am able to go to the download site and download new versions with no problem, but once loaded, ASaP will not go out by itself and update itself like it is supposed to do. When I manually right click on the tray icon and tell it to Update Now, I get a message that it is Unable to Connect to Update Server. It acts like it does not realize that there is an internet connection. It used to work fine. I installed Zonealarm after going to a DSL connection, and I set Zonealarm to medium security. Can anyone tell me how to get ASaP to autoupdate and find the internet connection?

Thanks

Hi

It seems that ZoneAlarm blocks the traffic.
What happens if you disable ZoneAlarm?

Have you allowed ASaP to communicate out from your machine in ZoneAlarms progam control?

When I disable ZoneAlarm the same thing happens. It makes no difference. I can configure ZoneAlarm not to start at Windows start-up, and then when I tell ASaP to manually Update Now, I still get the "Unable to Connect to Update Server" message. For what it's worth, when it is enabled, I have configured ZoneAlarm to allow ASaP to connect to the internet and I have tried both ways of configuring it to act as a server or not.

Something I suspect - I normally use the Netscape browser, and I know that ASaP requires Internet Explorer to work properly. Lately, I notice that when I start IE, it takes two attempts to connect. On the first try I get a dialog box wanting to know if I want to work offline or try again. Trying again always results in a successful connect. However, even when IE is running, I get the same ASaP message.

Hope this sheds some new light. I do appreciate the help.

Hi

I know that McAfee recently released a new version of their Rumor updating.

From the ASaP homepage...

McAfee Security recognizes that all desktops require comprehensive virus protection, yet for reasons of cost, security and productivity, not all users have Internet access. The Internet Independent update feature of VirusScan ASaP allows every desktop user to realize the benefits of the ASaP service without having an Internet connection. McAfee’s Rumor technology simply searches the subnet to find a workstation with Internet accessto act as a proxy. Using this proxy connection, VirusScan ASaP can download an update directly from the NOC (Network Operations Center), or alternatively, receive it internally from another workstation on the network.

A theory I have is that your installation maybe dont see you DSL connection but only tries to find any peers to update from.
Have you tried to uninstall and install again?

If this dont work, use your e-care support option on your customer homepage
