MBR Update Problem ( ASUS A7V8X-X Motherboard)

I have a new motherboard (ASUS A7V8X-X) and since I installed it I can't update the MBR on my hard drive.

Both LILO and DOS's FDISK both think they're writing to the MBR (ie they don't produce any errors) but the MBR is unchanged.

I tried a different hard drive with the same results, so it's not a strange problem with my main hard drive.

Do ASUS boards have a jumper that 'protects' the MBR from virii?

There's a virus protection option in the BIOS that I've turned off.

Ideas please?

How do you know MBR is not being updated? (presumably there must be something there you want to overwrite?)
