I partitioned my 60gb hard drive last night into 2 partions,
a 40gb partition c: and a 20gb d: partition using partition magic.

Long story short SOME but NOT all directories and files on the first partition are now unreadable and replaced by random characters. For example one directory i had once contained 10 files, now contains 4 dir with random characters. All the files and directory appear to be fine in the second partition.

I have not booted the computer since, even with a floppy in fear that i would corrupt the file system more.

I am interested in recovering as many files as reasonably possible from the drive, even if i need to buy a second drive to do so.

TIA,

Jason

I take it you don't have separate backups of all the data on both C: and D: partitions... It is difficult to forecast what will happen when you start trying to rectify this problem, so given the option I would try and make a disk-to-disk copy onto a new drive. After doing this, check that the situation on the original drive hasn't worsened. If ok, you could try two things. Either go for a restore of the partition(s) the way it was before, or let scandisk/Norton utilities have a go at it, on the newly copied drive. Then at least if this fails you can have another bite at the cherry with another copy off your original drive. You didn't say what op system you're using...

Good luck!
