I'm not a big computer guru or anything, but I was trying to clean up a few of my disk files in order to make more room on my harddrive, but I may have deleted one or more drivers in the process. Now when I go to play any of the windows games like FreeCell or Hearts, I get this message: "The drive or network connection that the shortcut 'FreeCell.Ink' refers to is unavailable. Make sure that the disk is properly inserted or tyhe network resource is available, and then try again." I have no idea what a network resource is, let alone making sure it's available. I need help fixing my problem and I need it bad!!! Anything that anyone can do would be great.

Normally My advise is to let a professional peice of software such as norton cleansweep(with SaftySweep turned on) do the job, or dont delete anything, that you dont know what it is. especially if it has an unfamiliar extenions, now one way to know if it were device drivers, is to take note of the errors you get when booting up, also goto Control Pannel -> system -> Device Manager Pannel, then see if there is anything with a red X, or yellow exclamation mark, this should tell you if there were any drivers for devices that are missing, or messed up. other than that, I would just say to be more careful next time, and not just go deleting files as if they dont do anything, there are alot more file types than just Device Drivers that can mess up your computer if deleted. (also I know this may sound dumb, but check the recycle bin)
Karl
kb244@kb244.8m.com
<a href=
Experienced in , or have messed with : VC++, Borland C++ Builder, VJ++6(starting),VB-Dos, VB1 thru VB6, Delphi 3 pro, Borland C++ 3(DOS), Borland C++ 4.5, HTML,Visual InterDev 6, ASP(WebProgramming), QBasic(least i didnt start with COBOL)

I looked in the Device manager pannel and didn't see any red X's or yellow exclamation points. And my Recycle Bin is empty. Anyother help on what the problem actually is and how to fix it would be great.

Sounds like you may have only removed a few of the files needed for your games. You may want to try this:

Goto Control Panel ---> Add/Remove Programs ---> Windows Setup ---> Highlight the 'Accessories' check box and hit the DETAILS button near the bottom. There should be a check box next to the GAMES options. Remove the check and hit OK. This will appear to remove all FreeCell, etc. . . games from your computer. Then, go back in the same way and place a check in that same box (basically telling windows to re-add all those games back).

Hit OK. Make sure you have your Windows98 CD around. It may ask for it when re-installing those games.

Hope this helps ~

The posting by "theripper" is good to replace the drivers you may have deleted. The error says the shortcut in the ".lnk" file is wrong or can't find a file it refers. Did you move any of the games to different directories? If so, the shortcut link in the ".lnk" file will point to the wrong directory.

Just another thought.

Here is a handy tip I learnt a while ago....
Go to start/programs/accessories/system tools/system file checker. In the new windows, choose tools and any one of the options to check out your system. (The general system checker is handy).
If you have deleted the file rather than just the short cut, it may prompt you to insert the W98 disk to reload it.
If you have simply deleted the short cut (try looking for freecell.exe in the Windows directory) then let me know and I will let you know how to re-set them up.

Tony
