You should use the master settings when installing an ide hard drive into a usb or firewire case. Im pretty sure thats the standard. One thing i can say is its always worked for me and i have about 10 usb and firewire boxes that I use, all are master.
The chipset inside the case is important. Some will handle larger hard drives, some wont. Its hard to say for sure. Best if you could find the mfgr website and check there. Some stop around the 130 gig mark.
However, sometimes its the bios of the motherboard that may not recognize the drive as 200 gig also, so you have some work cut out for you.
I would check with Cypress first, or the mfgr of the box you have, if the mfgr is Cypress or whoever.
You havent mentioned what os you are using. That is important. If its win xp then i believe you need sp1 installed.
If no luck there then perhaps you might want to consider a bios update for your motherboard.
Also check with microsoft regarding hard drive size.
I started going through your suggestions and uncovered / realized the drive was not formatted - i thought they came formatted these days ! so it's working fine now. Thanks again for the tips !
Ya gotta laugh when you dont even ask the very first question that should be asked: Is the drive formatted?
If you ever buy a firewire case can i suggest you get the one with the oxford chipset as opposed to other chipsets? Oxford is either the best or among the best. I hear there is an oxford 2 or oxford II as well.
Only reason i mention this is that some of us try firewire along with our usb.
