Diamond Max Plus 9 160 GB ATA /133 HD.

Crashed in my HP Pavilion A350N Win XP machine. I couldn't get it to reformat, or be read slaved. I used Acronis hd data recovery utility to scavenge what I needed. I still cannot get this thing to format or even be read slaved.

Can I salvage this disk for future use? If so, can anybody help direct what software to use to fix?

No knocking or pinging when it's fired up.

Thanks to all in advance.

I should mention. When checking properties on this drive. It shows 0% used and 0% available. I cannot defrag or use the hd tools for error checking. I click check now and nothing happens

Sounds like a dead drive but you could use something like Darik's Boot and Nuke or something like it to try and wipe the drive clean. It is better than a format since a format just wipes away the first letter of each file and makes it so it can be written over. The Boot and Nuke will actually zero out every sector on the drive.

If you cant get that to work I'd say its dead. With hard drives so cheap now it is hardly worth saving them anymore unless you want to tear it apart for learning value. Outpost.com has a Seagate 160 gig drive for less than $50 after shipping.

Cheers
Rob

The answer is always "PEBKAC!
