I am having a major issue with my hard drive. It is Maxtor 31024H1 internal drive. The computer was shut down for the night and in the morning I turned it on and it didn't want to boot to Windows. It would hand with a black screen and nothing would happen. I rebooted a few times and nothing happens. I went to the BIOS to see if it was there. And it was. I tried Windows 2000 boot disk. Nothing happened. Tried reinstalling Windows, it gave me an error saying that I can't install Windows. Took the drive out of the computer and tried putting it in as a slave in another computer. It wouldn't recognize it. Anything else I can try. I just want to at least get the files from that drive.
Please, what else can I try?

Maggie

Let's try this one again. Make sure you have the drive connected to the middle connector on the IDE cable (where slave drives must be located). Also, you can try it as the master on the secondary IDE channel if needed.

OK, so, how should I connect it. Right now, I have

Primary IDE Master: ST340016A (I guess that's the HD)
Primary IDE Slave: IOMEGA (zip drive)
Secondary IDE Master: LITE-ON (Floppy drive)

How should I connect the other HD as a slave?

You have an IDE floppy drive? Are you sure that's not a CD-ROM drive?

I would disconnect the Lite-On and connect the hard drive there as the master. Another option of course is to connect it as "slave" on secondary IDE leaving the Lite-On connected. If you do this, the hard drive must be attached to the middle connector of that cable.

It wouldn't hurt either, to try disconnecting the IOMEGA and connecting the hard drive there in its place, if the above doesn't work.

You have lots of options here...
