when I try to install my Maxtor 20GB HDD[model#2b020h1] as master the BIOS don't detect it and during the detection process a "tic tic" sound comes from the disk.
But when I attach it as slave with a Quantum Bigfoot 4GB HDD[this disk is set to master then]the BIOS detects the Maxtor as slave but the "Bigfoot" is not detected and the same sound comes.Though the "Bigfoot" has bootable windows XP loaded[it boots properly when the "BIgfoot" is installed independently],the "Boot disk failure.... messege appears.
The Maxtor worked properly with the "Bigfoot" before.
Is there any way to fix the Maxtor or its 'Dead' already?

Try the maxtor alone on the IDE with no strap inserted.
(making it single drive)

sounds like its on its way - go to maxtor's site & get their diagnostic utility to check it out - should tell you one way or the other.

I've tried the Maxtor as stad alone on the IDE, It wasn't detected when set to master, but when I set it to slave, it was detected. And I've disabled the 'quick memory check...selftest'option in BIOS.If it's enabled, the drive is not detected.
Again I tried it with the "Bigfoot"; setting it as sec master and the Maxtor as pri slave. Then both were detected and the OS booted form the "bigfoot". But in windows[clicking 'My computer'] the Maxtor drives weren't visible.
I've downloaded 'Powermax'from Maxtor's website and checked the Maxtor with the bootable disk. But that software couldn't detect any hard disk though the Maxtor was detected by the BIOS at that attempt. The sound still comes for a few seconds and stops later. Then only the sound of the spinning motor appears.

Backup what you can get off from it .
Sounds busted .
(have you tried another ide flat cable , preferably
an 80 pin one for increased signal integrety)

Perhaps some circuits is broken from the strapping
field and into the inside of the drive so the jumper placed on master isn't detected
correctly.

Btw that would explain why the bigfoot wasn't detected .

Idea !

Maxtor strapped as Master
(jumper not detected by the drive)
Result=Single drive

Bigfoot strapped as slave
Wont work cause the maxtor is single.

Could this be it.

Have you tried setting both drives as cable select? Then just moved the IDE cable to set the Master and Slave.
