A friend has Maxtor drive, model 5T040H4, that is failing and he asked me to take a look. According to Maxtor this drive should be 40 gigs but in the bios it only shows up as 20 gigs. I tried it in several different computers that I know support large drives but no change. And the bios reports the drive fails so I cant access it at all. I tried maxtor diagnostics but all the error codes are listed on Maxtors site as being invalid error codes?!? what is going on with this drive?

If the data on the drive is unimportant I would low level and do a full SMART test disnostics back to factory settings with Maxtors own Maxblast software available FOC on there website. This I believe is what Maxtor themselves will recommend. Martin Replying helps further our knowledge, without comment leaves us wondering.

maxtor have a utility called powermax it does a sequential test of your drive, the final one being a low level format, it's a very good piece of kit, try that before any other format utility. gl.

Thanks for the posts but I have tried the powermax diag and none of the diagnostics will run. They all return error codes that are invalid. All the diags say this drive predates SMART. I would like not to have to format the drive if I dont have to.
