I just received two new Maxtor 80GB SATA drives from Newegg, and I noticed on the drive labels that the drives seem to have been made by IBM. I see "IBM Warranty Void If Removed" near the barcodes at the bottom, along with other references to IBM. Is this correct, or am I reading this wrong? I really didn't want IBM drives.

Was this drive retail or OEM? What is the model number on the drive?

I suspect that newegg has packaged the wrong drive, especially if this was an OEM drive. IBM and Hitachi have merged into one, but there should be no relation to Maxtor and IBM as far as manufacturing or warranties are concerned.

Also, sometimes vendors will substitute like or better quality if out of what was ordered.

If they are the new 7K250 Hitachi (IBM) SATA drives then I think you have a good deal.
Toms Hardware recently voted them the best 7,200rpm drives on the market, they are faster than the maxtors and are of a newer design.

Well,I know IBM uses other manufacture's drives for there use,I had a 20GB maxtor off the shelf from best buy that had an IBM FRU number on it. Only 1 of the 3 drives purchased that day had the label. Is there any mention of Maxtor on the drive? It could be part of an OEM drive shipment that was slated for IBM and was cancelled for some reason,I don't think it has anything to do with the 11 maxtor drives i've replaced in IBM machines so far this year, considering I've replaced 0 IBM drives in the same span,I would want the IBM drive.

Both Maxtor and IBM told me that they do not provide a warranty for my drives; Maxtor because they are OEM drives to IBM, IBM because they were drives originally meant for IBM PC's. However, I was able to verify that Newegg provides a one-year warranty on them. Since even the retail versions only carry one-year warranties, this is not a problem. I installed both last night. They are quiet and seem to be quite fast. Sandra 2004 benchmarks them both at "50 MB/s".
