Maxtor DiamondMax 8 Problem

I've recently tried to install a Maxtor DiamondMax 8 30GB HDD on my PC, but I've encountered a problem. My BIOS sees the drive, but it reports size 0, cylinders 0, heads 0, everything 0. I was wondering what the problem could be. I've checked all the connections and the IDE cable.

Thank you.

it is set to auto detect in the bios? (ie, not manually set to zeros)

Have you connected drive anywhere else (ie, does it defintely work)?

Is this machine working in other respects (eg, does it recognise optical drives connected to it)?

It is on autodetect.

It works fine with my DVD RW drive on the same IDE cable.

I've tried the HDD on other computers and it has the same problem, so it's deffinetly a problem with the drive.

I was trying to find out what could be wrong with the HDD. Could it be an electrical problem or something wrong with the writing heads or magnetic disks?

Will the machine boot with the drive attached? If so, and you're running 2k/xp, have a look in disk management (run diskmgmt.msc). to see if windows can see it.

Also, might be worth running powermax from the Maxtor site to see what that says about it (if it can detect it at all of course).

It will boot (from my other HDD); it spends some time searching the Maxtor HDD, but then it boots; Windows XP SP2 does not see it.

I will try both disk management and powermax as soon as I can (I'm currently not at home).
