Hi, im new to SATA hard drives and iv just bought a 200GB Maxtor DiamondMax 10 SATA 3.0Gb, this is the only hard drive in my pc and i have plugged all the cables in and done what my motherboard has told me to do, and it tells me to boot my pc up and during POST press TAB, once i do that it comes up with a menu which is ment to happen but its not reconising my hard drive because at the bottom it says theres no hard drive found and i cant navigate through the menu at the top. Will someone please help me i need my pc up and running for tomorrow. Thanks alot

My motherboard is:
ASUS K8V SE Deluxe

The mobo should have a SATA/RAID bios which should recognise the drive - normally listed on screen after the prompt to go into RAID settings. It won't appear in the normal bios/POST screen. The normal bios may have an option to turn SATA/RAID on/off (though I don't think so - think I built a PC with that board faily recently - but worth checking if drive is not being detected. Presume its all connected correctly).

Also, if you want to install XP on this drive, you'll need to press F6 when prompted very near start of install process, then supply SATA drivers on a floppy disk when prompted shortly after. The drivers should be on the mobo driver disk (and also on Asus's website).

Knubbe,

Actually, as this is the only drive the settings are in the system BIOS.You need to know what SATA channel that you have connected this to i.e. 0 or 1. There is a settting to enable this channel and the controller. Also you must enable this as the boot drive (place in the boot order).

You do not want to enter the RAID setup and as I recall even if you do, being there is only 1 drive you can not setup a RAID array.

As wolluf posted, you will need to have a floppy with the SATA drivers to complete the XP install. This is on the mobo CD and you can use the makedisk routine to create.
