I have a Maxtor Diamondmax +9 120gb which has failed just outwith warranty. The drive is recognised but is not accessable.

I (more the fool me) had the drive in one of these "drive cooler" boxes to help quieten my PC a bit, and am suspicious that this has overheated the drive.

I have tried using Maxblast, and a few other utilities, but these either tell me nothing, or give spurious results

I would like to recover the data on the drive, but simply can't afford the prices being asked by the data recovery outfits.

It has crossed my mind that it could well be the control board which would fail first in overheat conditions(?), and have considered getting an new one to get the data (about 8 hours of family video) from the disk?

Any comments on the likleyhood of the board going before the drive in an overheat situation, or any other advice would be much appreciated.

Sometimes sticking a HD in the freezer for a few hours will enable it to run long enough to recover critical data.

Thanks,

but I have tried the freezer trick - without any luck.

Then, it appears that you have 2 choices, and neither one is desireable.
