I have already ran Maxtor PowerMax 4.09, its Installation Confirmation, Basic Quick, & Advanced Tests successfully (with positive results), yet when booting up it fails to remain stable even while being in the BIOS setup. It starts by blinking the screen momentarily and it eventually ends up freezing. This will happen wheather I enter into the BIOS or let it load WindowsXP (or ME to that matter).
What can be the prob? BIOS? the mainboard?

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance,

JDL

I was just realizing, after reading in the Maxtor's knowledge base, that my jumpers were not as they should have been. Apparentely the clj was not on its right place.
Could it be that my problem was only caused by this seemingly unimportant issue with the jumpers? Or would that be too beautiful to be true? ;)

Did you run the diag's on the same computer that is giving you the problem? If so, that would seem to eliminate the BIOS and mobo. I would look to the power supply or video card. Let us know what else is in the system.

Wow, you must be pretty experienced :)
No, those tests were not ran on the prob computer. Rather on mine.
Unfortunately I don't have more info on specs as of now.

Is there a chance this could be a virus?
I was just reading the PowerMax manual, here is an excerpt:

"A Full Low Level Format remains the most effective test for a drive with intermittent problems."

Sounds just like my drive.
What do you think?

I have more info now...
Well, I did almost all the PowerMax tests and reformated the HD with another Matrox utility (as they recommend).
Prior to doing this I made a backup of the HD with Drive Image Pro. Once done with tests and else I restored back with DriveImageP. successfully. I booted up using my computer and I had no probs.
However, when I went to install it back into my friend's pc it started doing the same crap again, in fact, I think this time it would flash only a couple of times before shutting down.
At this point I proceeded to remove the power supply and replace it for mine, but to no difference.
What could be next now? I am thinking the motherboard.
The problem is that the system shuts down so quickly that one wouldn't have the time to run a DOS antivirus or even get into the BIOS and change something, or reinstall motherboard drivers. This is what bothers me.
Should the motherboard be the culprit, what then? Is there hope for the mb? Or should it be changed and that's it?

Thanks in advance guys,

JDL
