Hello all,

Does anyone have any tweaks to maximize the performance of our SQL Server for Macola?

We have RAID5 for the Data, Raid1 for System, 3GB RAM, dual Xeon's.

It's running fine, but want to get the most out of it.

Looking for any additional tips.

Thanks

The most important thing you can do when designing the hardware in a SQL Server is to first provide SQL with fast SCSI drives working on separate channels for the system, data and log files. The next most important thing to do is dedicate the server to running SQL. This will provide you with fast access for a single user, then add memory and processors to scale for the load that more users bring.

The biggest mistake I see is that users throw memory and processors at SQL and pay no attention to the drive situation. If you don't have fast access with one user, it doesn't matter how many processors or how much memory you throw at a server it is not going to go any faster without fast, bi-synchronous, dedicated drive access.

Best increases I've seen in performance came from upgrading to gigabit network cards. Combine that with Stravis's advice on the drives and you will get a big boost.

That is good advice from vbajock. If you do add gigabit network cards you will also have to make sure that rest of your network isn't lurking in the dark ages. You should use switches not hubs and make sure everybody is on at least 100mb cards. If you have a Terminal or Citrix Server get as direct a connection as possible between it and the SQL Server.

Thanks guys. We do have the SCSI's set up as you say. It rips for one user.

We are thinking alike, because we just ordered a gigabit switch and gigabit cards for our servers that do not have them.

The gigabit backbone for the servers I am sure will help remove any bottlenecks. I am sure it will help our Citrix Servers as well.

You really have to convert all your clients who use Macola to gigabit. Otherwise your server will just be servicing slow requests for data in with the fast ones.
